It may look stupid hanging off the end of an impact driver, but not having to buy quick change drill bits (which always break) and not having to bring a big heavy cordless or (GF) corded drill to a small job is really nice. It's a little pricey and should come with any quick change hex driver (read Festool) already, but if you're switching to LIon 10.8V drivers (which you should the next time your NiCads die) you need this.

    Summary: A little pricey
    Comment:
I didn't really want to pay twice the price of the Milwaukee chuck, just for keyless operation, but what is the point of using a 1/4" quick change system if you're going to put extra steps and pieces in the mix? In the end, I didn't want to try to keep track of the chuck key and didn't want to lose the speed and convenience of having a keyless drill chuck that was quick change. I've tried some of those 1/4" quick change drill bits and they're just not up to the task. I like using my regular drills and if you need a long shank drill, like I've been using a 6" long 1/8" this week, you're stuck with fussing with a drill too.

I've used the Hitachi chuck several times now, with several different drill bits. It's worked fine. It locks up nicely and I've yet to have a drill spin, but I'm not really doing much to stress that point. The long drill would stress it the most, of the drills that I've used, but it has worked fine.
EDIT: 11/12/2009 - I finally encountered a problem with spinning on a 1/16" smooth shank drill bit that I was using to drill holes in an aluminum door with a high torque, high speed driver. I was drilling several holes and through a couple of layers and the chuck would spin on the bit on breakthrough. I really had to crank on the chuck to get it to work on the last couple of holes without spinning. I've used it on several other applications since my initial review, without problems. I'm still happy that I got the chuck.

In the end, the Hitachi chuck seems like a quality chuck, probably worth 5 stars. But, I gave it 4 stars because of the price. Most, if not all, battery powered screwdrivers don't have the power to really stress a chuck like this and that's probably going to comprise the majority of the people who buy this unit. There are a lot of cheap 3/8" drills out there, including a Hitachi keyless chuck, corded unit that sells for about $5 more than this conversion chuck. So, I'm not convinced of the value here.

But, I'm much happier now, using this chuck for drilling pilot holes for the screws I'm driving, than I was fussing with carrying a drill up the ladder in addition to carrying my bit driver. So, I'm keeping the chuck and will use it a lot to get my money's worth out of it.

This is a quality piece. Looks to be made in Germany by Rohm. It's very handy for use with those 1/4 inch impact drivers. Just say "NO" to the other made in CHINA units.
